Lovelace UNM Rehabilitation Hospital and UNM School of Medicine
launch special residency program

The University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine is expanding its capacity to meet patient needs with the launch of a new residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, based at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and Lovelace UNM Rehabilitation Hospital.

“We’ve been working on this for about two years,” said division chief W. Evan Rivers, MD, associate professor in the Department of Neurology. Ten candidates for the four-year residency have been selected from a pool of 90 applicants.

Come July 1, five newly graduated medical students will start their internship year, followed by three years of residency, Rivers said. At the same time, a second cohort of five who have already completed their internships elsewhere will commence their three-year residency stint.

“Lovelace UNM Rehabilitation Hospital is proud to partner with the UNM School of Medicine on such a unique program to train future physiatrists,” said Derrick Jones, CEO at Lovelace UNM Rehabilitation Hospital. “This is not only a great opportunity for physical medicine and rehabilitation residents to train at our hospital, but it’s also a great way to attract and maintain very specialized health care providers right here in our community. The partnership between Lovelace and UNM is a cornerstone example of collaboration.”
