Lovelace Women's Hospital treating uterine fibroids

Lovelace Women’s Hospital is the only hospital in the state of New Mexico now treating uterine fibroids, safely and effectively, with Acessa ProVu System™, a fully-integrated radiofrequency ablation, ultrasounds visualization, and guidance mapping system.

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus and affect 70% of women under the age of 55. Twenty five percent of those women experience significant symptoms from their fibroids. Historically, a hysterectomy has been the primary treatment for uterine fibroids. The Acessa Procedure™ is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive alternative. It requires no cutting or suturing or uterine tissue and patients typically go home the same day, experiencing minimal discomfort and a rapid return to normal activities.

Dr. Carrie Swartz of Bosque Women’s Care is performing the Acessa Procedure™ at Lovelace Women’s Hospital.

First stent in NM performed at Heart Hospital

The first ever Eluvia ™ Drug-Eluting Stent, in the New Mexico was recently performed at Heart Hospital of New Mexico at Lovelace Medical Center by New Mexico Heart Institute/Lovelace Medical Group vascular surgeon, Steven Henao, MD, FACC, FACS.

The Eluvia Drug-Eluting Stent is designed to restore blood flow in the peripheral arteries above the knee, including the superficial femoral artery and proximal popliteal artery. Its unique design features the sustained release of the drug (paclitaxel) that can prevent narrowing of the vessel, often the cause of pain and disability for patients diagnosed with peripheral artery disease (PAD).

PAD affects approximately 8.5 million Americans over the age of 40. The prevalence of the disease increases with age for both men and women, and if an individual’s PAD is caused by a buildup of plaques in blood vessels, they may be at risk of developing critical limb ischemia (CLI), stroke or heart attack, so proper treatment can play a vital role in managing the disease.
